BACKGROUND
Wisconsin, home to an almost even split of Republicans and Democrats, hosts a consistently lively political debate. Conflict on the issues is the norm, which offers interesting opportunities for local leaders wanting to make a splash. When it comes to transparent government, Wisconsin cities are making impressive strides; Madison and Milwaukee have made online information databases a priority.
Researchers have recently placed Wisconsin anywhere from first to 15th in the nation in terms of total tax burden. Government spending issues have come to the forefront as local groups have exposed overspending in everything from local community colleges to government employee benefits.
ISSUES
Citizen Recall:
Citizens for Responsible Government (CRG) is a local group that has formed a network designed to hold government officals accountable for their actions. They started in 2002, and have grown into a larger, state-wide organization that helps people recall corrupt or unresponsive politicians.
Tax reform:
The taxes in Wisconsin are among the nation's highest-and there are also a variety of hidden taxes. According to the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, state residents paid an average of more than $500 per person last year in mostly small, "hidden" federal and state taxes. Meanwhile, the Club for Growth Wisconsin found that money that is supposed to be paying for fixing transportation problems is instead going to lobbyists.
