Stay Awake for the Brownouts

Years ago, I would actually listen to lectures by economists on how the electric grid might function better. Pretty much only one thing remains in my head, the conclusion: Regulatory agencies and government-run electrical companies tend to be very inefficient when it comes to capitalizing their enterprises.Have you nodded off, yet?Sorry. There’s always been something a bit boring about these discussions. But the subject matter is really worth staying awake for. Why? [Read More]

Two Heads Are Better Than One: JC McElroy and Citizens for Government Accountability

As the saying goes, two heads are better than one--and when it comes to demanding politicians act accountably to voters and taxpayers, it couldn't be truer.

JC McElroy discovered this a year ago when he founded Citizens for Government Accountability in Union County, Kentucky.

"I organized a few local people who had worked independent of each other for years trying to keep local leaders fiscally responsible," McElroy said. "A group working for a common cause is always stronger than one or two people working separately."

The group researches and publicizes local and state issues, most of which fall under the category of "misused tax dollars." In doing so, they have been able to build a network of contacts within other county governments, as well as across the state.

And, with adequate funding in the future, the group hopes to put out a quarterly newsletter to better inform citizens about sound policies that will benefit the average citizen.

"Government is corrupt by nature," McElroy said. "Policies serve the special interest-funded parties, not the citizens who pay the salaries and benefits of these elected people. We always need more intelligent people who are motivated to help research and keep elected officials accountable."

To do so, McElroy encourages citizens to become familiar with open records laws and the rights they have to use those laws to gather information from any level of government.

Here's to McElroy and his team of Modern-Day Sams in Kentucky.
