Taxpayer Protection Initiative Passes in Washington State
“Thanks to the hard work of the I-960 team, the citizens of Washington State have won a victory for government accountability,” said John Tsarpalas.
CHICAGO, IL–Voters in Washington State yesterday passed Initiative 960, the Taxpayer Protection Initiative. Sponsored by a group of citizens led by Tim Eyman, Washington voters decisively passed a measure into law that requires greater taxpayer accountability and transparency.
“The Sam Adams Alliance is proud to have played a small part in giving the voters a voice in the matter of government spending,” said John Tsarpalas, president of the Sam Adams Alliance. “But our financial contribution was nothing compared to the hard work of ‘Modern-Day Sam Adamses’ such as Tim Eyman and his entire team. They campaigned against a well-financed and well-mobilized opposition, and won comfortably.”
I-960 requires a two-thirds legislative majority for tax increases; closes the loopholes in I-601 (a tax-and-spending limit passed in 1993); deters abuse of the emergency spending clause; and requires greater public disclosure when politicians seek to raise taxes or fees.
The Sam Adams Alliance aims to revive the principles of our namesake by connecting and supporting citizen leaders who are working to defend liberty, hold the government accountable, and protect the rights of taxpayers starting at the state and local level.
