Background:
Maine is a swing state with leanings towards the Democratic Party. Its governor and both representatives to the U.S. House of Representatives are Democrats. It has also cast its votes for the Democratic candidate in each of the past four presidential elections. However, both of the Senators are Republicans. Another important characteristic of Maine politics is the relative strength of third party or independent candidates.
Issues:
Tax reform: After releasing a report that shows the state is spending money faster than Mainers are earning it, the Maine Heritage Policy Center released a new Taxpayers Bill of Rights plan, available for groups looking to bring tax relief to the state.
