Building Partnerships: Sam Adams in Chicago

March 6, 2007

Leviathan on the Right On March 1, the Sam Adams Alliance joined the Heartland Institute and the Cato Institute to sponsor a book signing with Michael Tanner, author of Leviathan on the Right: How Big Government Conservatism Brought Down the Republican Revolution. More than 60 people from the Chicago area gathered over pizza and beer to discuss the current state of the political system and hear Tanner speak about his book.

In his speech, Tanner argued that Republicans have embraced big government and abandoned the principles of accountable government because of fear they won't be re-elected, even though these ideas are the ones that give them success.  Republicans continue to look for an explanation for their loss in the last general election, Tanner said, claiming they're still not "big enough," despite the fact that spending skyrocketed while they were in power.

Tanner's assessment of our country's political state of affairs illustrates the need to take action for change on the local level. By building a widespread network of local leaders willing to fight the battles on the ground for government accountability, we can make a ripple effect all the way up to the Capitol.
