Background
From its inception in 1907, Oklahoma politics heavily favored Democrats. In fact, Democrats had near absolute control of the state for the first half of the twentieth century, but since the 1950s and 60s, a bipartisan split has evolved. The split is such that most state officers and representatives have been Democrats, and most Congressional delegates have been Republican. Additionally, from the 1968 election onward, Oklahoma has always voted for the Republican presidential nominee.
Today, Oklahoma is the most bipartisan it has even been, but much of the state’s necessary reforms may not come from the parties, but from the people.
Issues
Education
One of the major planks of Gov. Henry’s re-election campaign in 2006 was to rally on education. Oklahomans want their children to attend good schools and have greater opportunities in life. Many believe there is a need for a more educated workforce, therefore education reform has been a top priority demanded of the government.
Taxes
Oklahomans are rarely tax increase proponents; more often, they call for repeals of various unnecessary taxes the state has imposed. In the 2006 election, there was an attempted ballot measure to let the citizens vote on a Taxpayers’ Bill of Rights (TABOR), which would have allowed taxpayers to vote on increased state spending.
