Stay Awake for the Brownouts

Years ago, I would actually listen to lectures by economists on how the electric grid might function better. Pretty much only one thing remains in my head, the conclusion: Regulatory agencies and government-run electrical companies tend to be very inefficient when it comes to capitalizing their enterprises.Have you nodded off, yet?Sorry. There’s always been something a bit boring about these discussions. But the subject matter is really worth staying awake for. Why? [Read More]

Local leaders

The Sammies--our contest for outstanding citizen leadership and creativity--is accepting entries. If you're a local-issue blogger, short filmmaker, open records champion or Modern-Day Sam Adams (or know anyone who is) then you'll want to send us your best for a chance to win $5,000 or $10,000 in cash...not to mention a a sweet, gold-painted Sam Adams bobblehead.

We've been peppered with questions about the Sammies. "Is my blog eligible?" "What does the video need to be about?"

We have a whole list of contest details here, but here's an answer to the most commonly-asked question: What's a valid topic for my entry?

The topic of your blog, video, open records success or leadership needs to be on a local or state level government accountability or transparency issue. We at the Sam Adams Alliance deal with economic freedom issues, so that's another way to look at it. For instance, if your school board keeps raising property taxes to pay for programs that don't seem to be helping students, that's an eligible cause. The same thing if your city council has a habit of taking private homes and giving them to companies that they're trying to lure into town.

Check out our list of Modern-Day Sam Adamses for a better idea of the kind of work that we focus on, and feel free to get in touch with us if you have any other questions.

The deadline for entry is December 7, 2007, so get your projects in for consideration soon!
