Bloggers Take Action for Accountable Government

It looks like Todd Rowden isn’t the only one who has reached his “Popeye moment”—several Illinois bloggers are also taking action to publicize the situation that Rowden uncovered involving millions of taxpayer dollars and the public school system. In particular, these bloggers are covering Illinois District 211’s apparent decision to obtain a contract with the Illinois Energy Consortium without first getting competing bids—an action which would be illegal.

This Modern-Day Sam Adams story even inspired one blogger to use the open records process in his district, 46, where he discovered school officials had also signed on with the IEC without opening the contract up for competitive bids.

Our Action Toolkit includes tips on how to use open records and blogging to hold public servants accountable—and these citizen journalists are perfect examples of doing just that. Here’s to them.
